The Rope makers of Southwell
The Wilkinson family owned rope making businesses in Worksop, Chesterfield, Retford and Southwell.
Men making rope
In 1894 Richard Wilkinson inherited a rope making business from his father Valentine Wilkinson. Situated in New Dyke Lane, this lane was later renamed to Ropemakers Lane and is now called The Ropewalk. Richard continued the business until about 1914.
